Volunteers take over Castle Donington Library

Castle Donington Library is about to be transformed into Castle Donington Community Library. Starting on 22 June 2016 the control and day to day running of the library on Delven Lane will move from Leicestershire County Council Library Services to a new Charitable Incorporated Organisation run by volunteers from the local community. It is hoped that the take over will be seamless. Initially the opening hours and services will be unchanged. However the new library management committee hope, over time, to extend the opening hours and enhance the services and events offered. The first step will be to offer wireless high speed broadband.

The new community library is funded by grants from Leicestershire County Council, North West Leicestershire District Council and Castle Donington Parish Council. Chris Hills, Vice-chairman of the Parish Council said: “The Parish Council was disappointed to learn that the library was under threat. We believe that it is important we help to protect local services, as such we have championed the formation of the volunteer run organisation and will do all we can to support it in the future. I believe that locally run services better address the needs of our community.” The new Community Library will be officially opened on 9 July by children’s author Andrew Cope. He has written books from the Spy Dog, Spy Pups and Spy Cat series.

Charitable Incorporated Organisation

Charity Commission Explanation

As part of the constitution of a CIO the organisation must have a set of object which describe the work of the CIO. The draft constitution has very broad objects so the CIO can do many things other than just run a library.

The objective of the organisation is:

  1. To advance and promote the education for individuals, organisations and companies in Castle Donington and surrounding area.
  2. To disseminate information to the general public.
  3. To provide recreation and leisure facilities for the general public.

We are up and Running

As last the Castle Donington Community Library has a website up and running!

Things are moving forward. Myself, Colin Burton and Fiona Palmer had a meeting this week with LCC library services to try and move forward the purchase of the library building on Delven Lane.

The paperwork for submission to the charities commission is in draft and currently being checked.

It is time to start to re-contact all the people who have shown an interest in the new community library. If everyone would register on this site it becomes much easier to contact people.
